Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment

Until 2008, there was an environmental group that was crammed into Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Tennis House. When they began bulging out of their current space, BCUE was able to obtain funding to build, staff and operate a new state of the art facility in the Gowanas section of Brooklyn. And this facility was registered with the USGBC targeting a LEED-CI Gold certification.

Occupying approximately 15,000 square feet on two floors of an existing building, BCUE, Andrew Freireich as the architect and the Nativo family as the contractor, pushed this project to the limit. The stair treads were salvaged from old barn beams, the wood doors were made from reused floor planks and joists, the HVAC system was fully automated with CO2 detectors in each room and there was even a rooftop recovery unit that mixed the exhaust air temperature with the incoming fresh air.
